Friday night, we drove down to LA county and stayed in a hotel that bills itself as 'upscale' located in a business park just off HWY 101. I was to swim in the hotel pool while the husband was out pedaling. When looking at potential places online, I had forgotten that hotel photos can be a bit deceiving. While it was true that the hotel we stayed in indeed had a pool, it was more of a wading pool and highly salinated. I accidentally ingested a bit of the pool water and it was like drinking the remnants of a salt-water gargle glass. Mouth firmly closed unless I needed to breathe, I took that darn pool as a challenge and swam laps for about 30 minutes anyway.
The hubs returned from his ride in the afternoon on Saturday. I came up from the pool and we lazed about the hotel before making our way out to a beach in Malibu for a lie-down in the beach tent. We couldn't remember where we'd packed the newspapers, so a crossword was not on the cards.

As the day wore on, my husband's ankle started to ache. He wasn't sure what the cause was, but it began to hurt to the degree that he felt he couldn't do the second ride on Sunday. We drove home that day instead.
On the drive down to LA, our scenic route detour was re-routed due to what appeared to be wildfire. This image was our view of the fire from the car as we made our ascent up HWY 154. It wasn't clear at this point that what we were seeing would impact our travel.
Eventually, a long line of cars, ours included, were stopped on the mountain with little understanding as to what was happening. Suddenly, emergency vehicles, sirens ablaze, were jamming past us. At that point, other motorists began turning their cars around and heading back to HWY 101. After a few minutes, we opted to do the same.
About a mile back down the hill we saw this:
Highway patrol had closed the roadway to through traffic. Funny thing was a bunch of motorists were still stopped up the hill beyond this closure. As we waited for the officer to wave us forward, we wondered who was being sent up the hill to notify the others who had not yet turned around, and were, presumably, still waiting to be allowed to proceed over the mountain.
Yikes, what a weekend! Salty pool water, swollen ankles, no crossword puzzle and a wildfire! I hope your husband's ankles recovered and it wasn't anything serious like a sprain.
ReplyDeleteHaha, yes. It doesn't seem to be sprained as he's all right now, for the most part.
DeleteSounds like an eventful weekend. Debra's comment above made me grin. I think she covered it all!
ReplyDeleteYes, she did! :)
DeleteWhat a weekend indeed. I am glad to hear your husband's ankle is better.
ReplyDeleteSigh on the salty pool. Our are more often heavily chlorinated. To the extent that you can smell it on your skin and hair for hours.
The wildfires (which we call bushfires) are scary things. In early spring we have already had some shockers.
It was SO salty. I wondered why the hotel would have it that way...
DeleteI'm sure brushfires in your area can become quite unruly. Ours may be matching your at this point.
Saturday was a nice day. I hope you didn't get too much wind at the beach. Considering that the whole state seems to be on fire (and it's October, so unsurprisingly), I'm glad you didn't get any closer to that one.
ReplyDeleteIt was a perfect beach day. No wind. :)
DeleteI've suffered from man-flu, but -ankle???
ReplyDeleteHa! Yes, the dreaded man-flu befalls my husband now & again. This really did seem like an actual issue. :)
DeleteHope the ankle improves...check the cleats on the shoe concerned?
ReplyDeleteThe news on the fires is scary...too much building where it isn't sensible and not enough controlled brush burning to simulate natural processes
Thanks. I will ask him if he has checked the cleats.
DeleteYes, one thing that really struck me about So Cal weather is that it felt so much drier and hotter than up here in the Bay Area. En route to the beach in Malibu, I spied at least one street sign stating that residents must clear brush from around their residences or face a hefty fine. We've lots of not very sensible building across the state, unfortunately.
Out for a nice fun weekend. One never knows what will happen.
ReplyDeleteOne never does!
DeleteDear Bea, the news each night on NBC and PBS Newshour is of the wildfires in northern and southern California. I so hope you are in the clear and do not have to worry about evacuation. It looks like climate change and brought a whole new season to California. How hard and how much suffering and anguish this will bring. Peace.
ReplyDeleteWe are in the clear, fortunately, Dee. I have acquaintances in the East Bay who either lost power or had to evacuate for a short while. We smell smoke in the air here, but not much, at present.
DeleteHope the hubby's ankles are feeling better. I have been deceived by hotel photos for most of my life. They are pretty good at making things look a lot better than they are.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Mr. Shife. Yes, hotel photos show the BEST of everything which turns out is very little IRL. Heh.
DeleteYikes, you must have been pretty close to the fires. Years ago we were driving up the coast on vacay, and actually ended up with ash on the car, too close for my comfort; but hubby thought it was an adventure. They hadn't yet close the area we were in, and voluntary evacuations were going on. Made no sense to me to be going in while others were leaving, and then came upon several fire camps. FINALLY I got him to turn around. It was smoky and the sky was orange. I wasn't a happy camper. Glad you conquered the pool anyway, sorry hubby had ankle problems. Hope he's ok now.
ReplyDeleteSandy's Space
Oh, Sandy, that's sounds a bit too close for comfort for me as well!
DeleteHe's OK-ish. -says it still hurts, alas.
