Marcel, drag attack, Taj Mahal

Yesterday marked Marcel Marceau's birthday. One of my cats is named after him. My Marcel, too, reacts to things that are not actually there and often gives us a wide-eyed stare. I wish our Marcel had more manageable nails like I assume Marcel Marceau's probably were. The sofa cushions could use a rest.

What in the Sam Hill is happening in Tennessee? On March 3, an anti-drag law was enacted to, I guess, prevent minors from seeing drag performers of any stripe perform anywhere on public grounds. Perish the thought!

When he was in his late thirties/early forties, my cousin performed drag under the moniker Page Turner (har-har) at a local bar called Martuni's. My cousin has a decent set of pipes on him, so the show was always a good time. And the uptight fucks in Tennessee might have kept their shirts on over the sight of Page as she looked less like RuPaul and more like a homely elementary school teacher. (Sorry, cuz.)

Robin Williams in drag.

The Taj Mahal houseboat is sinking. It's been docked at Sausalito marina for the past 50 years. Tuesday's storm gave it a severe rocking and it's taken on water. There was a team out armed with fourteen pumps trying to save the houseboat, but to no avail. As of this afternoon, the TM was under about five feet of water. I've read that it will need to be demolished. -such a shame as the Taj Mahal houseboat has been a magnet for both locals and tourists alike. I'm sort of wondering if I can get my butt over the bridge to have one last look before it's gone.

The Taj Mahal in better days.

  1. Aaargh. Surely the legislators have MUCH more important issues to focus on.

  2. I've never heard of the Taj Mahal houseboat before -- what a gem!

  3. This crazy rain... I don't get all the brouhaha over drag performances. They've been doing such things for decades. But I guess some people need to distract from their own actual issues.

    1. Indeed! Also, I think now at Pride parades in TN one could be arrested for 'performing' drag?! Will no one think of the children???!!! Ha.

  4. Drag names are a scream. I wonder if there are any drag performers without a sense of humour, or an inability to conjure puns? I don't think I've seen a Mary Smith or Joan Brown on a flyer posted recently, but Carmen Geddit and Maxi Shield are two who spring to mind :)

    1. Yes, they are. A friend of my cousin, Eddie, performed drag under the moniker Cookie Dough which I thought hilarious.

  5. I never thought about the last name of our beautiful Dragqueen Olivia - though it is funny too to choose that unflashy name: one will never overlook Olivia ever: with 1,95 m height and those colourful clothes that would not be possible.

    1. Olivia certainly is statuesque. -great for a drag performer.

  6. Female impersonation as it used to be known has been used in entertainment forever. I can understand wanting to ban vulgarity, but not all drag. What next? Some Like It Hot? How do you decide what is and is not drag?

    1. Exactly. How does one decide...? Meanwhile, there was another mass shooting at school today and it happened in the state where 'men can no longer wear dresses', basically, in the public sphere. Geezus.

  7. Didn't know that about the boat. Too bad it has to be destroyed. Dang the far right everywhere is losing their minds...if they had a mind to begin with. I'm so sick of them thinking they can control what everyone else sees, reads, or watches. NO ONE makes them read a book they don't want to, or watch a show they don't want to; but their constant need to control everyone else is disgusting. It's so backward. How, in this day and age have people not learned from history, from what happened when Hitler controlled the media, the books, the music etc. But, they don't seem to have a problem with children being slaughtered in school buildings.

  8. Best of luck to your sofa cushions. We are on high alert keeping our tissue boxes and hair accessories safe. Lucy has a vendetta against both of them. I had no idea there was a Taj Mahal house boat but now I do so good luck to it as well. And I am not sure what is going in Tennessee or the rest of the red states for that case. We are living in an insane, idiotic world where they are more worried about men in dresses than keeping kids safe in schools.

    1. Paper towels are occasionally slaughtered by one or both of the cats. We only see the aftermath and never the perp. It is so nauseating to think of the inaction on gun issues by members of the GOP. Hate it.

A piece of your mind here:

Earthquakes and old friends...

I was en route to my mom's place in the East Bay around 11a when a warning message flashed across my phone's screen: TSUNAMI WARNING...
