Rock trivia.

If you've not already clicked on the video, then I've a question for you:

Can you name the non-Scottish band who performed the only rock-n-roll (and I mean blazing guitars kinda rock) song that makes use of the bagpipe?

When I was a kid, this as yet unnamed band's music was ubiquitous. They were in heavy rotation on the radio, they were being blasted out of the windows of muscle cars, they were occasionally being played at the roller rink. I don't think I knew back then that the whine of the bagpipe was what I was hearing. Maybe I thought it was a screeching organ, I don't remember. Anyway, the song still rocks--bagpipes and all.

  1. I was never a fan. I was just a little young when they were in their prime, and by the time I was really listening, I got into a different type of music.

    1. Did you know the answer already? Yeah, We are about the same age, from what I recall. My hometown was in a bit of time warp with respect to stoner culture, to be honest. That didn't mean I didn't also go gaga for Depeche Mode, XTC, Fine Young Cannibals, etc.

  2. Bagpipe music always makes my eyes leak. I have no idea why but it does.
I knew of them (of course) and probably know many of their songs but was never much of a fan.
I came across Depeche Mode late (introduced by a blogger). Dave Gahan's voice melts me. I am pretty certain he could sing the alphabet and I would swoon.

    1. Depeche Mode is pretty sweet as are some Spandau Ballet songs.

And OF COURSE you would know these lads. (Is that a spoiler?) I really dig the vid to this song as it shows a certain city at a specific time in history.

  5. I have never heard them. The bagpipe ... very interesting and I liked it.
I try to listen to music with an open ear. One doesn't have to like the sound ... but can still appreciate the talent.
Most likely the group can play many styles of music and just chose what they enjoy. :)

    1. Yes, it's an interesting use of the bagpipe, isn't it?

  6. Didn't know. Not surprising as the guy in the schoolboy shorts always put me off them.

    1. I think Angus Young with his 'bad school boy' schtick is precisely why, in part, American teens in the '70s and '80s were into these guys.

    1. Nice! (Well, there are bagpipes in a US song, I think, and Van Morrison's gang probably dabbled, but AC/DC's use of the pipes absolutely ROCKS.)

    2. Um, that should read 'U2'.

  8. I cannot imagine standing on a moving vehicle, playing an instrument (those who were playing). Love knowing it was bagpipes.

    1. I know. It's crazy. I like seeing the street car in action. Ours, by that time, were almost all removed from service.
