Via social media, I was turned onto a guy called Brian who created the colorful flag shown hanging in the third picture posted. He'd put up the flag image on his Twitter account and wrote that if there were any sort of robust interest in obtaining one, he'd have them made at a joint up in Oregon, then distributed. At least 20 flag-fans give the thumb's up, so he sent the image away for production. The flag is roughly 3'x5'. I have yet to purchase a flag holder for out front of the house, so this beaut currently acts like a sheer curtain over one of the front windows. I dig it. I also dig the history of our city's flag as it was something that I hadn't known about until recently.
One might look at the black-and-white flag below and think, oh, that's SF rising out of the ashes of the '06 quake and resultant fires. But, no, this image was created in 1900, so it couldn't possibly be related. From what I have read, I think the phoenix is meant to represent our having come through the Mexican-American war only to reach new heights.
Flag ca. 1929. The wording reads: gold in peace, iron in war. |
The city adopted this version of the flag you see below in 2010. It's...interesting. The gold 'frame' is actually an incorporation of gold fringe that used to border the flag in earlier decades. And check out that rather uninspired-looking: SAN FRANCISCO. What sort of font is that? Also, why is the name of the city on the city flag? Do we not know where we are? To quote the character of Alexis on Schitt's Creek: Ew, (David)!
I very much prefer Brian's flag image. It's tidy-looking, colorful and attractive. Looking at it now, I would guess that the gray, upper half could represent fog--of which we are not usually in short supply--and the gold, bottom half might be a nod to California's moniker of the Golden State. If only SF city and county could be convinced to replace the gold-rimmed one with Brian's! I suppose that if enough residents were to hang Brian's flag out in front of their homes, then maybe his design could gain some traction. Both time and demand will tell.
It's a far cleaner design. Good luck to him.
ReplyDeleteI much prefer Brian's flag as well. It would make a great emblem for a sports team. Maybe the Niners want to rebrand or perhaps the A's. Thanks for your birthday wishes. Much appreciated.
ReplyDeleteHaving seen you on too of the blogs I follow - a Happy Birthday to you from Australia.
DeleteCan you imagine a phoenix as mascot? That would be pretty cool. And you're welcome! You can wish me a HB come July!
DeleteIt is a decided improvement. You have to wonder what the original designers were thinking...
ReplyDeleteIt really is head and shoulders above our current flag.
DeleteHave you seen 'Devs'? I didn't realise that San Francisco was so huge.
ReplyDeleteI haven't yet seen it. I had thought that it was set in the South Bay (of the SF Bay Area). Now I'm very curious to check it out as SF isn't really a very big city, geographically speaking.
DeleteThat's what I thought. There are some drone or helicopter shots which show a huge area with high-rise building.
DeleteI watched the first ep last night and it does show an impressive downtown. In reality, during the day and not lit up, the downtown/financial district area is slightly less impressive-looking. One shot, in particular, showed the massive (some say 'eye-sore') Salesforce structure built a few years back. It's kind of like Mt. Fuji in that you can almost expect to see it from no matter what the vantage point around downtown.
DeleteOh yes, Brian's flag rocks! The best one of the three!
ReplyDeleteHe's got a talent, for sure.
DeleteYes, that is a much better flag. I didn't realize cities had flags until I took photo in high school. One of our assignments was to get a pic of our city's flag.
ReplyDeleteMay your flag be at least more eye-catching than ours is currently!
DeleteVery attractive flag.
ReplyDeleteYes, it is. I saw a few of his earlier SF flag creations and they were also very visually appealing, if, however more abstract in design. He has a talent, clearly.
