I took my buddy, Mike, to Zurich on a day trip while we were staying in Germany very near the Swiss border. He and I hung in the touristy bits of town, had coffee and cake at Honold's and visited the Chagall stained glass at the Fraumünster, but I really wanted to take him to my favorite Brocki, aka second-hand shop, Tigel's. My husband and I spent a lot of time in this three-level shop when we lived in Zurich. For all the talk of Switzerland being expensive, and it is, one can always find a good deal at a Brocki. Mike, currently living off of savings, is on a super budget, but was also keen to potentially bring back wee gifts for friends and family. He found a few decent trinkets for folks back home at the Brocki for a pittance. Yay!

In addition to traveling with Mike, I spent a fun weekend in Stuttgart with a friend whom I'd first met while working at a cheese shop (pictured above) selling British cheeses at an upscale market hall in Zurich. The clientele were primarily expats from Great Britain, a handful of Americans and curious Swiss Nationals. The gig was a fun one for us. We got to shoot the shit with interesting people, sell some tasty cheese, and pour folk good beer all while getting paid a decent wage. Since moving away from Zurich, the shop has undergone a bit of a name change and has spruced up a bit. I think the reason for that is the proprietor and his then partner broke up and the joint has since moved in a slightly different direction. At the very least, it looks to be doing well, pandemic notwithstanding.
It looks and sounds like a wonderful day trip - for you both.
ReplyDeleteIt was fun. I really miss living there.
DeleteI don't think we could get away with selling British cheeses in France without starting riots.
ReplyDeleteFunnily enough, the Swiss don't seem to mind.
DeleteA very attractive-looking shop.
ReplyDeleteYes, it's been a bit spruced up over the past handful of years.
DeleteYou must really know your cheeses then!
ReplyDeleteWonderful thrift shop on the third floor.
ReplyDeleteIt's a great shop. Top floor is large furniture items and men's and women's clothes. Basement level is glassware and kitchen wares. Ground floor is jewelry, books, some games and toys, electronics, pottery, etc.
DeleteLooks like a wonderful time, Bea, and I look forward to hearing about it with future updates. Take care.
ReplyDeleteThanks, bud. It was lovely in Zurich. How could it not be? :)
