Heat wave

'Embiggen' the photo in order to truly appreciate the tiny toilet with adult-sized sneakers placed next to it. I don't think it was a funky art installation, but it sort of looked like it could have been.

This was the first trip I have taken to the beach since September of last year. (Foot stuff had been preventing me from making the attempt until now.) My feeling better coupled with current, super-scorching temperatures (30C+/85F+) drove me to it.

I sat for a spell, read the paper, and ate a wee snack before dipping the old toes into the Pacific. A slew of 'free range' dogs racing around barking at each other compelled me to beat feet sooner than I had hoped. (Side note: I am beginning to think that a dog attack I sustained a few years' back has probably affected my sense of well-being.)

  1. Free range dogs would bother me. Just the rush of the wind could knock me down. But then, walking on the beach is out of the realm of possibility these days. You go back when you can, though. It's your beach, too.

  2. Smiling at that tiny toilet.
And smiling more broadly that you were able to get back to the beach.
Free range dogs bother me too.

    1. It was so perfectly formed. -like the Cadillac of tiny toilets.

  3. I prefer dogs to be on a leash. Safer for all concerned. Guess that toilet must be for little jobs only.

  4. Love the toilet and glad you were able to get to the beach. I always worry about free roaming dogs. When I go for my morning walk I have my long handled "picker upperers" to pick up rubbish and feel I could use them and the bucket to help fend off any dog(s).

    1. Yes, I was glad as well!

May you never have to use your 'picker-uppers' as a defense tool. :)

  5. If you get fed up of the sun then come to Yorkshire.

    1. I like the sun, but dislike the heat. Does the sun shine in Yorkshire? ;)

  6. How DID that toilet come to be on the beach in the first place? I'm imagining someone carrying it in their arms, walking across the sand.
I would be very cautious (nervous, afraid?) of those dogs. I have to really know one to feel comfortable around it. -Jenn

    1. I was wondering that as well. There didn't seem to be a family nearby to claim it, so it's anyone's guess as to how it came to be at the beach.

The interesting thing about dog owners these days is that they seem to not realize how other people (and other dogs) might react to the sight of their many off-leash dogs roaming around.

  7. I suspect someone is toilet training a toddler...

I'm phobic about dogs, too. It's lessened as I've aged, but as a kid... I'm pretty sure I got attacked by a dog (maybe just a firm barking, maybe a nip) when I was small. I don't recall it, but my mom tells me I was okay around dogs until I wasn't.

    1. I think, too, that the no. of off-leash dogs seems to have increased in recent years. Dog owners flaunt the rules quite a bit 'round these parts.

  8. Coincidentally, I did a double-take this afternoon when I saw two toilets at the curb across the street, then I see your photo — must all be a mirage, due to the heat. We’ve been coping with 100+ degrees so appreciating the A/C.

Packs of dogs, even the ordinarily friendly family pets can be like human packs — possibly being unpredictable. I still have the scars from a neighbor’s dogs — 3 or 4 — when I was 10 or 11 yrs. though this wasn’t at the beach. One in the pack gets aggressive and the rest pile on. I would be leery of dogs running free on the beach.

    1. Haha. Yes, heat mirages abound!

It's a strange turn of the culture whereby we have accorded pets the status of offspring. That elevation has changed how we view and interact with Fido.

  9. Methinks it was toilet training at the beach but who knows anymore. Glad you got some beach time.

    1. I guess it makes sense? -coupling something fun (going to the beach) to do with something challenging to do (using the john)?

  10. I don't like dogs full stop, but especially ones running freely. So did you use the loo? ;)

    1. I would have broken that loo!!

I am less trusting of dogs as I age, but more so less trusting of thoughtless dog owners.
