Beach walks

I may have taken my last beach walk for the duration yesterday as there were new signs put up in the parking area stating that one should consider staying home. (We are not on lock-down here.) Although there were very few people on the shore, making staying socially distant quite easy, I now feel uneasy about being there because of the signage.

This guy wins a trophy for being 'most socially distant', wouldn't you say?

As you can in the above photo, people are still practicing 'social clustering' here in SF. I imagine it's the same, sadly, in most places around the globe. I'd heard reports of heavy car traffic on routes out to the more scenic and sought after bits of the California coastline over the past weekend. I wish it were a national holiday, but now ain't the time to be clogging up the beaches with picnics and Frisbee games.

I will leave you with a few snaps taken at my hometown beach yesterday--

Turban snails and solitary anemones uncovered at low-tide.

Hermit crabs in shallow water.

Mussel cluster. The sandy bits are actually colony anemones.

Lone orange starfish amid a mass of colony anemones & wee turban snail clusters.

  1. Loving your beach walk.
We aren't in lockdown (yet) either, but are being encouraged to stay home when possible. There are some mixed messages about though - hairdressers can remain open but gyms and libraries have been closed.
    Stay safe, stay well.

    1. Oh, that's interesting that hairdressers are open in your neck of the woods. I think that they are shut here. I've read that your Kiwi neighbors are undertaking rather drastic measures at the moment. I think PM Ardern has got the right thinking about all of this mess, to be honest.

May you and yours be safe & well, too. x

  2. Hair salons and barbershops are closed here in Canada too. I'm already planning on cutting my own hair with the kitchen shears.

  3. There are photographs of ignorant behaviour everywhere. It just makes it stricter and likely to last longer for everyone.

  4. I can't believe people on the Tubes today in London, like sardines in a tin, when we've clearly been told to stay at home. I've been out once in the last week to fill my car up with petrol just in case there's an issue. I went straight in wearing gloves, and then sanitised my hands as soon as I got back in the car. Then you see people in cafes and bars not making any effort to socially distance at all. Prats.

    1. I've seen the packed Tube photos. WTF?

I had to tank up recently and the pay-at-pump system was down. -reluctantly had to walk into the mini-mart to pay directly & watched as dudes clustered in behind me to pay as well. :S

  5. I think the beach is okay, but it was just that so many people went that it was too crowded. Gov. Newsom has said getting out for walks is good. I know I need to get outside. But everyone seems to be clustering to the nice places.

    1. Yeah, the state beach lots that are closed seem to be not any around here. I'd imagine LA, San Diego and more scenic spots farther north have been besieged & shut down as a result.

  6. It seems like after the initial rush, the virus hoped, skipped and jumped across the country.

  7. It's starting to get serious in Idaho. We got issued a 30-day shelter in place today and the kids got school closed until April 20 now. We also went to a state park and a hiking spot last weekend and it was way busier than usual. We are living in crazy times.

    1. Super crazy. Our Gov. Newsom has said that one shouldn't expect schools to be re-opened until autumn.

    2. The previous shelter in place was issued by our mayor but now our Governor came out today to say that the whole state is shut down. Which is good and what we need to do based on the data we have seen but people are losing their minds. I am keeping it together - thank you beer - but a lot of folks are going loco. Take care.

  8. We're not in lock down here in L.A. area -- yet! Expect it's coming though. I drove out a couple times to a drive-thru. Haven't needed anything from the store so far but won't always be so. Just stayin' in! Take good care of yourself.

    1. Yes, it's coming soon enough. I caught a snippet of Gov. Newsom's radio address today. Schools are officially closed until May 1. That probably means schools will re-open in autumn.

Take care of yourself as well! x

  9. They had to close some of our beaches when the self-isolation measures took hold because people were flocking to them in their hundreds. Ironic.

  10. It's a real moveable feast, for sure. Meanwhile the critters of the world continue on, and will probably appreciate the bit of breathing space in their habitats for a bit.

  11. The only way to stay safe is by not interacting physically with others. It is absolutely essential that this virus runs out of people to infect.

    Take care.

  12. Yes, sadly you are right, too many people aren't taking this seriously and aren't staying home. This is going to be a long haul I fear, and longer because people are being irresponsible. Stay well.
